POWER TOOLS

Power tools are important to learn at any age. Although safety is of the utmost importance all these tools in the MakerSpace are safe to use as long as you are properly trained.

SCROLL SAW

For cutting soft materials such as wood and plastic. Allows for smaller and finer cuts. The blade can also be removed and inserted through a hole to cut interior features.

Scroll Saw Safety Rules:

  • Please unplug after every use.

  • Never keep it the blade running after you have made your cut. Please shut off in between passes. 

  • Please keep your fingers on the outsides of the guards at all times. 

  • Only an Expert is able to use the Scroll Saw. 

ELECTRIC DRILL/DRIVER

For drilling holes and driving screws in a variety of materials. Cordless allows greater versatility, corded often provides more power and doesn’t need to be recharged.

Electric Drill Safety Rules:

  • Please make sure that the drills are Plugged in for charging when the battery is dead.

  • Drill Bits are very small and can sometimes get lost around the busy MakerSpace. Please make sure they are placed in their home at the workbench. 

  • Never swing a drill around.

  • Expert supervision necessary.

JIG SAW

Used to cut curves and complex shapes in relatively thin (1.5” or less) wood or other materials. Use blades specific to the materials being cut.


Jig Saw Safety Rules:

  • Ensure the guard is in place prior to use.

  • Use a threshold rest (slotted foot) to hold the stock.

  • Ensure blade is properly attached and secured.

  • Make turns slowly, no sharp turns with a wide blade.

  • Use safety glasses with side shields or machinist’s goggles as a minimum. Consider face shields.
